Ishmael Reed

Ishmael Reed is a giant in world literature, a Buffalo, NY, hometown, youth, started his writing career here and moved on to make his mark in the world as one of America’s most important literary figure of this century. The Buffalo Empire Star blog named after a publication Andrew Jackson Smitherman (1885-1961) founded in Buffalo in the 1930’s first as the Buffalo Star later the Empire Star. Reed wrote  “at a very early age, …when he was only 13, he started writing a jazz column for the Empire Star. “I didn’t know what I was talking about,” Reed now admits, but he nonetheless put his thoughts down about Sonny Stitt and other jazz musicians.”
